Mazak to Showcase QUICK TURN NEXUS 450-II MY with Long Boring Bar at IMTS

Exceptional heavy-duty turning technology for the energy industry

Florence, Kentucky, May 21, 2012 - Mazak will showcase more than 20 high-performance machine tools in booth S-8300 at IMTS 2012, taking place Sept. 10 - 15 in Chicago, Ill. Among those machines is the QUICK TURN NEXUS 450-II MY/LBB (long boring bar), which brings unmatched productivity and reduced cycle times across a wide range of long, large-diameter shaft-type part applications.

Ideal for the energy, heavy vehicle and other large component industries, the QUICK TURN NEXUS 450-II MY, when paired with the optional 40" long boring bar, can achieve deep-hole boring to depths of 31.5". The machine's rigid construction also provides high-precision machining over long periods of time.

The QUICK TURN NEXUS 450-II MY/LBB's headstock features a 15", 18" or 21" (381 mm, 457 mm, 533 mm) chuck, mounted on a 50 hp, 2,000-rpm integrated spindle motor main turning spindle for heavy-duty metal removal. The spindle also serves as a C-axis, capable of being indexed at 0.0001° increments to accurately position parts for square facing and slotting cuts and precisely drilled holes. Additionally, the C-axis spindle is a full-function CNC controlled axis for milling.

The machine also utilizes a 12-position drum turret, and 10 hp, 4,000-rpm rotary tool spindle for milling, drilling, and tapping operations, allowing many processes to be completed in a single machine cycle. Axis travels measure 13.39" (340.1 mm) in X, 8" (203.2 mm) in Y and 125" (3,175 mm) in Z.

Additionally, the machine's NC servo tailstock enables automated processes. The tailstock is fully programmable, driving the W-axis on its own AC servomotor and ball screw. Through the part program, the tailstock will retract to a known position and its center makes contact with the part with consistent holding pressure. Further, because of its positive independent drive system, the tailstock can be used to drill holes on a shaft centerline, which adds versatility to the jobs it can process.

Another standard device is the beneficial Tool Eye, an automatic tool-presetting system. By bringing the tool tip into contact with the Tool Eye, offset of tool nose position, tool measurement, and data registration are done automatically, ensuring accuracy and reducing setup time. The Tool Eye also can be programmed to monitor tool wear on a periodic basis.

A variety of automation strategies can be integrated with the QUICK TURN NEXUS 450-II MY/LBB, from an automatic bar feeder to full robotic integration of either pedestal-mount or overhead-mount robot arms, driving required labor costs down and productivity up.

In addition to running real-world application cutting demonstrations on the QUICK TURN NEXUS 450-II MY/LBB at IMTS, Mazak will also feature advanced machining technologies for a wide variety of industry segments, including aerospace, automotive and medical. Additionally, IMTS attendees will get to experience a brand new Mazak booth as well as learn about a new 3-4-5 manufacturing solution for better tailoring Mazak machines to specific applications.
