Vertical machining center efficiently processes large, complex workpieces
Florence, Kentucky, June 15, 2012 - Mazak will showcase more than 20 high-performance machine tools in booth S-8300 at IMTS 2012, taking place Sept. 10 - 15 in Chicago, Ill. Among those machines is the VORTEX 1060V/8, a highly productive vertical machining center that processes large, complex components in single setups, making it ideal for the aerospace and construction machinery industries.
The VORTEX 1060V/8 provides simultaneous 5-axis surface contouring with a powerful 50 taper, 50 hp (37 kW) tilting spindle that delivers maximum speeds of 10,000 rpm for achieving extremely high metal removal rates. An optional 5,000-rpm spindle that generates up to 368.8 ft-lbs. of torque for heavy-duty cutting is also available. Speed and productivity are further increased through the machine's fast rapid traverse speeds of 1,654 ipm (60 m/min) as well as its large 40-tool magazine standard, with optional 80- and 120- or 160-tool magazines.
The VORTEX 1060V/8 offers spacious axis travels of 41.73" (1,060 mm) in Y, 73.82" (1,857 mm) in X and 52.95" (1,345 mm) in the Z axis for accommodating maximum workpiece dimensions of 49.21" x 49.21" (1,250 mm x 1,250 mm).
The VORTEX 1060V/8 incorporates Mazak's MX Hybrid Roller Guide System in the X-, Y- and Z-axes for increased levels of durability and reliability that result in long-term machine accuracy. Mazak's MX Hybrid Roller Guide System provides vibration dampening to extend tool life, allows for handling higher load capacities, generates faster accelerations and decelerations to shorten cycle times, consumes less oil for "Greener" operations, and lasts longer with less required maintenance.
Mazak equips the VORTEX 1060V/8 with the company's new MAZATROL MATRIX 2 CNC control designed specifically for optimized 5-axis machining. Within the control are both enhanced hardware and software functionalities that make the control easy to use while also delivering high accuracy and increased productivity. Control hardware performance is much faster with higher processing speeds for small increment operation. Furthermore, a 5-axis spline interpolation function included in the control's software provides smooth toolpaths from long block-by-block programs, easy tool vector control and shorter cycle times as well as superior 5-axis surface finishes.
The VORTEX 1060V/8 comes standard with a square pallet that is available in two sizes, 31.5" x 31.5" (800 mm x 800mm) or 39.4" x 39.4" (1,000 mm x 1,000 mm). An optional 2-pallet changer system is also available for this machine.
At IMTS, Mazak will show attendees how the VORTEX 1060V/8 integrates with the 2-pallet changer system to significantly reduce part cycle times and machine non-cut times. With an automatic 2-pallet changer, machine operators can load, unload and inspect parts on one pallet, while the machine continues to work on parts fixtured on the other pallet. When one pallet of work is completed, change out time between the two pallets is a matter of seconds. Another key to further increasing the productivity of the VORTEX 1060V/8 is linking it with the Mazak PALLETECH Manufacturing System, which improves overall machine utilization and aids in lights out operations.
In addition to running real-world application cutting demonstrations on the VORTEX 1060V/8 at IMTS, Mazak will also feature other advanced machining technologies for a wide variety of industry segments, including medical, energy and marine. Furthermore, show attendees will get to experience a brand new Mazak booth as well as learn about a new 3-4-5 manufacturing solution for better tailoring Mazak machines to specific applications.
