Mazak Spotlights New VCU 400 and 500 Machines at DISCOVER 2013

Modular machine series offers high-performance, high-value small parts processing

FLORENCE, Ky., Oct. 8, 2013 – As two of 13 possible machine configurations within its VERTICAL CENTER UNIVERSAL (VCU) Series, Mazak demonstrated the 3-axis versions of the VCU 400 and the VCU 500 machines at DISCOVER 2013. The small-footprint, highly versatile vertical machining center series brings technology and production value to high-precision small-parts machining involving simple to complex geometries produced in low, medium or high volumes.

The machines within the series come in 3-axis table or 5-axis rotary/tilt table versions, as well as with various X-axis travels and pallet changing capabilities. Ideal for basic part geometries, those with 3-axis table configurations provide effective part processing with quick, simple setups.

For increased versatility, the 3-axis VCU 400 and VCU 500 machines are available in three different types – A, B and C – characterized by X-axis stroke. Type A has an X-axis of 505 mm (20”), Type B an X-axis of 805 mm (31.7”) and Type C an X-axis of 1,000 mm (39.4”). Those with an X-axis stroke of 505 mm (20”) will pair with a twin-pallet changer for continuous operation and enhanced productivity.

All VCU machines feature powerful, rigid spindles that deliver increased productivity and exceptional accuracy. Each machine comes standard with a robust, high-performance 10,000-rpm, 40-taper spindle for unbeatable metal removal capabilities in all the common materials, including steel, aluminum and cast iron. A variety of other maximum spindle speeds are available so that users can effectively match spindle performance with their part-machining requirements. Those optional spindles include 12,000 rpm and 20,000 rpm in 40-taper, along with 42,000 rpm in E40 (HSK).

To significantly reduce non-cut times, VCU machines feature cam-driven automatic tool changers that quickly exchange tools and get spindles back in the cut in the shortest times possible. Reliable tool monitoring on these machines maximizes production efficiency and lowers operating costs via early problem detection. A standard tool storage capacity of 20 tools ensures continuous machining operation, while an optional 30-tool magazine is available to further reduce set-up times and increase machining flexibility.

Both machines share the same small footprints of 2,150 mm long x 3,155 mm wide x 3,176 mm high (84.6” x 124.2” x 125”) in the Type A; 2,500 mm long x 3,175 mm wide x 3,348 mm high (98.42” x 125” x 131.8”) in the Type B; and 2,750 mm long x 3,175 mm wide x 3,348 mm high (108.2” x 125” x 131.8”) in the Type C.

While the machines occupy minimal floor space, they still provide large work envelopes for processing a wide range of part sizes from 400 mm x 400 mm x 305 mm (15.748” x 15.748” x 12”) up to 850 mm x 400 mm x 305 mm (33.46” x 15.748” x 12”) with the VCU 400 models and from 500 mm x 500 mm x 305 mm (19.685” x 19.685” x 12”) to 900 mm x 500 mm x 305 mm (35.4” x 19.685” x 12”) with the VCU 500s.

The VCUs also feature Mazak’s MX Hybrid Roller Guide System that enables the machines to deliver high levels of durability and reliability, resulting in long-term accuracy. The innovative way system increases vibration dampening, extends tool life, handles higher load capacities and eliminates tramp oil in the coolant by utilizing a greener grease-based lubrication system.

The VCU 400 and VCU 500 3-axis machines are equipped with Mazak’s SMART CNC control. With the control, even inexperienced operators can quickly and easily develop machining programs to help shorten machine set up times. In fact, programming time is 75 percent faster with the SMART CNC control when compared to machines using EIA/ISO systems, which is especially beneficial when machining a wide variety of less complex workpieces requiring simple turning, milling, drilling and tapping operations.
