Mazak Shows Production Power of the QTZ 250MY-2T at DISCOVER 2013

Double spindles, double turrets deliver versatility and high-performance multi-tasking

FLORENCE, Ky., Oct. 8, 2013 – At DISCOVER 2013, Mazak demonstrated how the simultaneous two-spindle operation of its new QUICK TURN ZENITH (QTZ) 250MY-2T takes Multi-Tasking to high-volume production levels inside its North American Manufacturing Plant. With two spindles and two turrets, each with milling capability and Y-axis off-center machining, the Multi-Tasking machine delivers unbeatable part processing versatility.

With the machine’s two spindles and two turrets, shops gain the options to either process two separate workpieces simultaneously with spindle/turret pairs working independently, perform sequential operations passing parts from main to second spindle or machine long parts using both spindles. Machining flexibility is further enhanced with the capability to run either bar fed or chuck work.

Both turning spindles on the QTZ 250MY-2T provide 4,000 rpm, 35 hp, for heavy-duty machining. As a fixed headstock design, the machine’s main turning spindle features a 10” chuck and 3.58” through-hole diameter, while the second turning spindle has a W axis travel of 92” for accommodating long workpieces and for moving to the main turning spindle for synchronized part transfers.

For increased processing speed, each of the QTZ 250MY-2T’s turrets works independently and simultaneously at a spindle, or both turrets can machine at opposite ends of a long workpiece. Both 12-position turrets can accommodate milling tools at any station and provide 4,500-rpm, 7.5-hp milling capability and 4” of Y-axis travel for off-center machining operations.

When machining long heavy workpieces on the QTZ 250MY-2T, a K4 steadyrest delivers strong stable support. The servo-driven system positions anywhere along the machine’s X-axis and handles part diameters from 2.36” to 11”.

QTZ 250MY-2T machine axes in X and Z measure 12.25” and 44.5”, and all of the machine’s axes incorporate Mazak’s MX Hybrid Roller Guide System for high levels of durability and reliability that result in long-term accuracy. The innovative way system increases vibration dampening, extends tool life, handles higher load capacities and eliminates tramp oil in the coolant by utilizing a greener grease-based lubrication system.

The QTZ 250MY-2T features the new MATRIX 2 CNC control. Within the control are both enhanced hardware and software functionalities that make the control easy to use while also delivering high accuracy and increased productivity. Control hardware performance is much faster with higher processing speeds for small increment operation that provides shorter cycle times as well as superior surface finishes.
