Mazak Showcases the MEGATURN NEXUS 900M at T3

Multi-Tasking CNC Vertical Turning Center is built for heavy-duty machining

Florence, Kentucky, October 25, 2011 – Attendees of T3 – Tomorrow's Technology Today, a Discover Mazak 2011 event, experienced just how easy the MEGATURN NEXUS 900M combines turning and secondary machining operations to efficiently cut large cast iron and steel workpieces, such as those commonly processed in the construction machinery, industrial machinery and jet engine manufacturing sectors.

The MEGATURN NEXUS 900M Vertical Turning Center accommodates a maximum workpiece size of 36.2" x 31.5" (919 mm x 800 mm) and utilizes the Mazak's MX Hybrid Roller Guide System to deliver levels of durability and reliability that result in long-term accuracy. The system increases vibration dampening to extend tool life, handles higher load capacities, accelerates and decelerates quicker to shorten cycle times, consumes less oil for "Greener" operations, and lasts longer with less required maintenance.

For heavy-duty machining, the MEGATURN NEXUS 900M employs a powerful, rigid 40 hp (30 kW), 1,250-rpm integrated main drive motor/spindle that generates 2,696 ft. lbs. of torque. Additionally, the machine carries maximum part loads of 6,614 lbs. (including the chuck).

Mazak designed the MEGATURN NEXUS 900M with a 12-position drum turret for rapid tool indexing. The turret is rigidly clamped by 16.7 tons of force on a 12.99" (330 mm) high-index coupling, allowing for high performance machining and intermittent cutting. The machine delivers a rotary tool spindle speed of 4,000 rpm and 70.2 ft. lbs. of torque. It also removes material at a rate of 58.6 in3/min, which is 1.4 times higher than comparable vertical turning lathes.

The MEGATURN NEXUS 900M comes standard with Mazak's Tool Eye, an automatic tool-presetting system. By bringing the tool tip into contact with the Tool Eye, offset of tool nose position, tool measurement, and data registration are done automatically to ensure accurate and fast part setup. The Tool Eye can also be programmed to monitor tool wear on a periodic basis.

The MEGATURN NEXUS 900M is equipped with Mazak's sixth-generation MAZATROL MAXTRIX NEXUS CNC system for advanced conversational programming and EIA input as well. It offers a 12" (305 mm) LCD color display and the familiar QWERTY keyboard. A pointing device, acting like a mouse, and USB port for downloading programs are also at the operator's fingertips. In fact, the MAZATROL MATRIX NEXUS makes it possible for the time required from programming to the completion of the first workpiece to be just a third of that of conventional systems.

Integrate the MEGATURN NEXUS 900M with an optional 2-pallet changer and further boost its productivity through continuous machining.
