3-axis vertical machining center brings high-performance, high-value to small parts processing
FLORENCE, Ky., Oct. 8, 2013 – At DISCOVER 2013, Mazak showcased one of its newest small-footprint vertical machining centers, the VERTICAL CENTER UNIVERSAL (VCU) 300. Ideal for basic workpiece geometries, the machine brings advanced technology and production value to high-precision small parts machining for a variety of industries.
The VCU 300 has a 3-axis table that provides effective part processing with quick, simple setups. The machine easily pairs with a twin-pallet changer to increase spindle utilization and allow users to benefit from continuous uninterrupted production. For manufacturers that require 5-axis machining, the VCU 300 is available with a rotary/tilt table, called the VCU 300 5X. Both the 3 and 5-axis versions offer X and Y-axis strokes of 11.8” (300 mm) and a Z-axis travel of 20.07” (510 mm).
Featuring a powerful, rigid CAT-40 taper 10,000-rpm spindle, the VCU 300 offers unbeatable metal removal capabilities in common materials, including steel, aluminum and cast iron. Other maximum spindle speeds are available, such as 12,000 rpm and 20,000 rpm in 40-taper as well as 42,000 rpm in E40 (HSK), so that users can effectively match spindle performance with their part machining requirements.
The spindle chiller on the VCU 300 maintains a constant spindle temperature to prevent heat build up and improve machining accuracy. Other benefits of the chiller include extended spindle life, increased machining capacity and reduced maintenance costs.
An 18-tool standard storage capacity on the VCU 300 ensures continuous machining operation, while an optional 24-tool magazine is available to further reduce set-up times and increase machining flexibility. To reduce non-cut times, the VCU 300 features a cam-driven automatic tool changer that quickly exchanges tools and gets the spindle back in the cut in the shortest times possible. Reliable tool monitoring on the machine maximizes production efficiency and lowers operating costs via early problem detection.
The VCU 300’s footprint measures 38.58” (980 mm) wide x 96.45” (2,450 mm) deep x 104.3” (2,650 mm) high. While the machine occupies minimal floor space, it still provides a large work envelope for processing part sizes up to 13.78” (350 mm) x 11.8” (300 mm) x 12” (305 mm) and weighing as much as 441 lbs (200 kg).
The Mazak MX Hybrid Roller Guide System on the VCU 300 enables it to deliver high levels of durability and reliability, resulting in long-term accuracy. The innovative way system increases vibration dampening, extends tool life, handles higher load capacities and eliminates tramp oil in the coolant by utilizing a greener grease-based lubrication system.
The VCU 300 is equipped with the Mazak SMART CNC control. With the user-friendly control, inexperienced operators can quickly and easily develop machining programs to help shorten machine set up times. In fact, programming time is 75 percent faster with the SMART CNC control when compared with machines using EIA/ISO systems, which is especially beneficial when machining a wide variety of less complex workpieces requiring simple turning, milling, drilling and tapping operations.
Based on a modular design concept, the VCU 300 and two other VERTICAL CENTER UNIVERSAL machines – the VCU 400 and VCU 500 – provide the ultimate in manufacturing flexibility via 13 different model configurations, including 3-axis and 5-axis versions, various X-axis travels and pallet changing capabilities.
According to company officials, only Mazak offers such a wide range of machine configurations within one design platform. Whether parts are simple or complex, produced in low, medium of high volumes, the VERTICAL CENTER UNIVERSAL Series has a machine that can offer the perfect balance of advanced technology, increased productivity and maximum value.
