Mazak MULTIPLEX 6200-II Y With Gantry Loader Provides High Productivity

Multi-Tasking machine features dual spindles and dual turrets for enhanced part processing

Florence, Kentucky, October 25, 2011 – At T3 – Tomorrow's Technology Today, a Discover Mazak 2011 event, Mazak featured the MULTIPLEX 6200-II Y Multi-Tasking CNC Turning Center. Designed for enhanced single-setup, mid-size lot production and continuous operations, the machine incorporates dual spindles, dual turrets with milling tools and Y-axis capability.

The MULTIPLEX 6200-II Y is a Level 2 machine in Mazak's Five Levels of Multi-Tasking, which were developed as an effective way for manufacturers to determine the best multi-tasking technology for meeting their specific application and process needs.

Within the Five Levels of Multi-Tasking, Level 1 machines typically offer a single turning spindle and drum-style turret with rotating tool capability for processing minimally complex workpieces. Level 2 machines add Y-axis functionality for off-center machining operations and Done-In-One machining together with either a twin spindle and milling turret or twin spindle/twin turret machine configuration. Level 3 Multi-Tasking machines feature independent milling spindle headstocks with B-axis indexing, as well as Y-axis travels and tool storage magazines. Level 4 machines emphasize automation and processing large or highly complex workpieces using full, simultaneous 5-axis machining. Level 5 is the addition of specialized machining tasks, such as gear cutting, honing and grinding, that transform Level 4 machines into Level 5 Ultra-Tasking machines that process even the most demanding and complex parts complete in single setups.

The twin spindles on the MULTIPLEX 6200-II Y each offer an 8" chuck size and a bore size of 2.4" (61 mm) in diameter, and each delivers 30 hp (22 kW) and maximum speeds of 5,000 rpm. Since both spindles offer identical performance, part-processing flexibility is greatly increased.

The twin VDI-type turrets on the MULTIPLEX 6200-II Y hold 12 tools each, and rotary tools can be mounted in any position. Y-axis travels of +/- 2" (+/- 50 mm) and live tooling capabilities of the turrets further increase Done-In-One productivity.

Identical twin spindles and identical twin turrets with Y-axis travel allow for unique part machining on the MULTIPLEX 6200-II Y. Long shaft parts can be held using both spindles and machined with synchronized spindle rotation. Or the first operations of parts can be done with the No. 1 spindle/turret, and then parts transfer to the No. 2 spindle/turret for completing remaining operations. Or, two parts can be completed simultaneously and independently at both spindles/ turrets and using the machine's center partition.

Both left and right machine spindles can be equipped with a Mazak Tool Eye unit. When tool tips are brought into contact with these units, the Tool Eye data management system automatically registers tool position information to the machine's CNC. The system can also be used for tool measurement and tool breakage inspection.

The MULTIPLEX 6200-II Y handles bar work diameters up to 2" (50 mm), shaft work lengths to 21" (530 mm) and chucked workpiece lengths to 7" (180 mm). It provides a standard machining diameter of 10.24" (260 mm) and a maximum swing of 12.6" (320 mm) in diameter.

The MULTIPLEX 6200-II Y's axis travels incorporate Mazak's MX Hybrid Roller Guide System to deliver levels of durability and reliability that result in long-term accuracy. The Mazak MX Hybrid Roller Guide System dampens vibration to extend tool life, handles higher load capacities, accelerates and decelerates quicker to shorten cycle times, consumes less oil for "Greener" operations, and lasts longer with less required maintenance.

To further enhance the unattended productivity of the MULTIPLEX 6200-II Y, the machine integrates with the GL-100 F gantry robot that handles up to 22 lbs. and pitch feeder conveyor. Additionally, a variety of workpiece conveyors and gantry robot systems are available for extremely extended periods of unmanned operation.
