Multi-Tasking CNC vertical turning center easily tackles large, challenging workpieces
FLORENCE, Ky., Oct. 8, 2013 – At DISCOVER 2013, Mazak demonstrated how its MEGATURN NEXUS (MTN) 900 CNC vertical turning center excels in the heavy-duty cutting of large, low-to-medium profile, tough-to-machine workpieces made from cast iron and steel, such as those commonly processed in the industrial machinery and jet engine manufacturing sectors.
The MEGATURN NEXUS 900 accommodates a maximum workpiece size of 36.2” x 31.5” (919 mm x 800 mm). It employs a powerful, rigid 40-hp, 1,250-rpm integrated main drive motor/spindle that generates 2,696 ft. lbs. of torque. Additionally, the machine carries maximum part loads of 6,614 lbs., which includes the 18” chuck.
Mazak designed the MEGATURN NEXUS 900 with a 12-position drum turret for rapid tool indexing. The turret is rigidly clamped by 16.7 tons of force on a 12.99" (330 mm) high-index coupling, allowing for high performance machining and intermittent cutting.
The MEGATURN NEXUS 900 comes standard with Mazak’s Tool Eye, an automatic tool-presetting system. By bringing the tool tip into contact with the Tool Eye, offset of tool nose position, tool measurement, and data registration are done automatically to ensure accurate and fast part setup. The Tool Eye can also be programmed to monitor tool wear on a periodic basis.
The MATRIX NEXUS 2 CNC control on the MEGATURN NEXUS 900 offers unequalled innovation for conversational programming. The control incorporates a wide variety of advanced features for increased productivity through high-speed, high-accuracy machining as well as ease of operation.
The MEGATURN NEXUS 900 comes with right- or left-hand configurability, which makes it a flexible solution for automation as well as helps alleviate space constraints for some customers.
An optional two-pallet changer can be added to the machine to increase spindle utilization.
