Mazak HORIZONTAL CENTER NEXUS 5000-II Features Speed and Power

Advanced headstock design offers high-speed machining capabilities

Florence, Kentucky, October 25, 2011 – At T3 – Tomorrow's Technology Today, a Discover Mazak 2011 event, Mazak demonstrated the high-speed machining capabilities of its HORIZONTAL CENTER NEXUS 5000-II. The horizontal machining center's advanced headstock design and high-speed, high-accuracy positioning provide unsurpassed part processing flexibility and significant reductions in non-cut time.

The machine's 47 hp (30 kW), 40 taper spindle with optional 18,000-rpm top speed (12,000 rpm standard), utilizes an advanced compact integral spindle/motor design for low vibration and low heat generation while providing a maximum torque rate of 159 ft-lbs (221 Nm) and spindle acceleration of 1.8 seconds.

Mazak offers horizontal machining centers in pallet sizes ranging from 15.8 sq-in (400 sq-mm) to 49.2 sq-in (1,250 sq-mm). The HORIZONTAL CENTER NEXUS 5000-II, in particular, is equipped with a 19.7 sq-in (500 sq-mm) pallet that accommodates workpieces of up to 31.5" (800 mm) diameter and 39.4" (1,000 mm) height, weighing up to 1,540 lbs (698 kg).

The HORIZONTAL CENTER NEXUS 5000-II provides fast and precise axis positioning, even at high feedrates. Machine travels are 28.7" (730 mm) in X and Y and 29.1" (740 mm) in Z, and rapid traverse rates are 2,362 ipm (60 m/min) per axis at 0.8 G (optional 1.0 G) acceleration. Smooth high-gain servo and high power AC servomotors allow for such fast, vibration free acceleration/deceleration rates.

The machine's NC rotary table rotates 90° in 1.5 seconds and features 0.001° minimum step for precise four-axis indexing and machining. The table incorporates Mazak's high-precision 360-degee position coupling and accommodates workpiece sizes up to 24.8" (630 mm) in diameter and 39.37" (1,000 mm) high.

Cam-driven tool changing on the HORIZONTAL CENTER NEXUS 5000-II further reduces non-cut times by ensuring fast and reliable 2.7-second chip-to-chip tool change cycles. With a maximum tool diameter capacity of 3.74" (95 mm), the automatic tool changer provides storage for 40 tools standard (60, 80 and 120 tools optional).
