Mazak Demonstrates Powerful SLANT TURN NEXUS 550 at DISCOVER 2013

CNC turning center is built for heavy-duty machining of large, long shaft workpieces

FLORENCE, Ky., Oct. 8, 2013 – At DISCOVER 2013, Mazak demonstrated its powerful, heavy-duty SLANT TURN NEXUS 550 turning center. The machine efficiently tackles large part turning applications such as oil field pipes, pipeline control valves, turbine wheels, aircraft and off-road parts, as well as the production of power-generating components for the aerospace, oil, gas, coal and nuclear industries.

The SLANT TURN NEXUS 550 employs a solidly constructed headstock with a 10.8” (274.3 mm) diameter bore and a powerful 1,000-rpm, 60-hp turning spindle that generates up to 5,163 ft-lbs of torque for heavy-duty cutting. The spindle also accommodates a 21” chuck size.

The machine, with a maximum swing of 40.94”, is available in 80”, 120” and 160” bed lengths for cutting to 158.8” long. An NC programmable tailstock and optional automatic steady rest provide controlled and secure support for both shorter and longer workpieces.

The machine’s tailstock enables automated processes. Through the part program, the tailstock will retract to a known position, and its center makes contact with the part with consistent holding pressure. Further, because of its positive independent drive system, the tailstock will drill holes on a shaft centerline, adding process versatility.

For reducing non-cut time, the SLANT TURN NEXUS 550 utilizes a 12-position non-lift drum turret with rapid tool indexing. Designed for minimum interference with boring bars while turning, the turret allows VDI-type tool holders to be quickly loaded/unloaded by turning one bolt for faster tool setups.

Mazak’s MATRIX NEXUS 2 CNC control on the SLANT TURN NEXUS 550 simplifies metalworking operations. The control offers both conversational part programming and EIA/ISO formatted programming. Once programs are imported into the MATRIX NEXUS control, a realistic 3D cycle simulation verifies the machining cycle and checks for machine interferences, greatly reducing the need for test cuts.
