Mazak Demonstrates High Productivity of VORTEX 1060V/8 at DISCOVER 2013

Machine performs simultaneous 5-axis and multiple-surface machining in single setups

FLORENCE, Ky., Oct. 8, 2013 – At DISCOVER 2013, Mazak demonstrated how its VORTEX 1060V/8 double column vertical machining center with large Y-axis stroke productively and accurately performs simultaneous 5-axis and multi-surface machining on large, complex workpieces in single setups.

Available in 31.5” x 31.5” or 39.4” x 39.4” pallet sizes, the machine is ideal for the aerospace and energy industries. It handles workpieces up to 49.21” in diameter and 49.21” high and has a maximum loading capacity of 5,952 lbs., which includes pallet weight.

The high-performance 50-taper, 10,000-rpm spindle that comes standard on the VORTEX 1060/V8 effectively tackles a wide range of applications. The optional high-speed 15,000-rpm spindle is perfect for machining aluminum, while the high-torque 50-taper, 5,000-rpm spindle option easily handles the heavy-duty cutting of steel or titanium workpieces. For high accuracy, the spindle’s B-axis positioning utilizes a backlash-free roller gear cam and has 0.0001-degree minimum program increments. The spindle also serves as a C-axis that indexes in 0.0001-degree increments to accurately position parts.

The VORTEX 1060V/8 comes standard equipped with a tool magazine storage capacity of 40 tools, while 80, 120 and 160-tool magazine options are also available for increased machining versatility.

The VORTEX 1060V/8 features Mazak’s MATRIX 2 CNC control designed specifically for optimized 5-axis machining. Within the control are both enhanced hardware and software functionalities that make the control easy to use while also delivering high accuracy and increased productivity. Control hardware performance is much faster with higher processing speeds for small increment operation. Furthermore, a 5-axis spline interpolation function included in the control’s software provides smooth tool paths from long block-by-block programs, easy tool vector control and shorter cycle times as well as superior 5-axis surface finishes.

The two-pallet changer that comes standard on the VORTEX 1060/V8 increases spindle utilization and makes for continuous uninterrupted production. For complete unattended operation, the VORTEX 1060V/8 easily integrates with Mazak’s modular PALLETECH Manufacturing System, which provides the flexibility required for shorter product life cycles, reduced in-process inventory and just-in-time production.
