Machine offers high production of complex, multi-process parts and automated operations
FLORENCE, Ky., Oct. 8, 2013 – At DISCOVER 2013, Mazak demonstrated its QUICK TURN NEXUS (QTN) 250-II MSY-D with double-turret technology. The Multi-Tasking machine features large tooling capacity, without the tool magazine expense, for the high production of complex, multi-process parts and automated operations. It also has two turning spindles, milling capability and Y-axis functionality for Done-In-One® production. The machine’s double turret design “stacks” the turning and milling turrets so that one is on top of the other, creating a capacity of 23 tools and increased processing versatility. The turning turret is a bolt-on type for stationary tooling that performs both I.D. and O.D operations on part diameters up to 7.48”. The VDI-style milling turret delivers 4,500 rpm, 7.5 hp for milling, drilling and tapping work as well as for C-axis contouring and Y-axis off-center machining using the machine’s 4” Y-axis travel.
The two turning spindles on the QTN 250-II MSY-D generate the power and speed for both heavy-duty and high-speed machining of bar fed or chucked workpieces. The main headstock features a 10" chuck, mounted on a 35 hp, 4,000-rpm integrated spindle motor for heavy-duty work, while the second spindle, with 6” chuck, provides 6,000 rpm and 15 hp for high-speed applications and finishing operations. Both spindles have a full C-axis with 0.0001-degree increments for full contouring capability.
The QTN 250-II MSY-D can also be equipped with a GR100 gantry robot loader as well as with a loop pallet conveyor for complete unattended, high-production lights-out manufacturing. The two-axis overhead gantry loads and unloads parts from the conveyor that features 12 pallets for continuous machine operation.
Machine axes incorporate Mazak’s MX Hybrid Roller Guide System for high levels of durability and reliability that result in long-term accuracy. The innovative way system increases vibration dampening, extends tool life, handles higher load capacities and eliminates tramp oil in the coolant by utilizing a greener grease-based lubrication system.
Mazak’s MATRIX NEXUS 2 CNC control simplifies multi-tasking metalworking operations on the QTN 250-II MSY-D. Conversational part programming can be accomplished in MAZATROL language while the machine is cutting another part, or off-line in a CAD/CAM system. Once imported into the control, a realistic 3D cycle simulation verifies the machining cycle and checks for machine interferences, greatly reducing set up time.
As part of Mazak’s Five Levels of Multi-Tasking, the QTN 250-II MSY-D is a Level 2 machine – those with Y-axis off-center machining capability. Mazak’s Five Levels of Multi-Tasking allow manufacturers to precisely match machine capabilities to part processing requirements. Machine features and functionalities within the other four levels range from Level 1 with single spindle and rotating tool capabilities to Level 3 machines featuring independent milling spindle headstocks with B-axis indexing, as well as full Y-axis travels and tool storage, to Level 4 machines that provide full simultaneous five-axis capability and Level 5 Ultra-Tasking machines with additional specialized machining functions and Multi-Tasking automation.
