Full 5-axis machine boosts efficiency, flexibility and productivity in very large part production
FLORENCE, Ky., Oct. 8, 2013 – Mazak demonstrated the full 5-axis capability of its VERSATECH V-140N double-column machining center inside its North American Manufacturing Plant at DISCOVER 2013. With a spindle head that positions vertically, horizontally and at any angle in between, the machine delivers unsurpassed performance and productivity in the machining of very large workpieces.Mazak equips the machine’s spindle head with a powerful 10,000-rpm (6,000-rpm, 12,000-rpm optional), 50-hp integral spindle motor. The head performs full simultaneous 5-axis multi-face machining in single setups to significantly reduce large-part handling and repositioning while also boosting cutting accuracy.
As standard, 30-tools fit in the machine’s automatic tool changer that exchanges tools within a quick 16.5-second chip-to-chip time to reduce non-cut time and shorten overall part cycle times. Mazak also offers optional 60 and 120-tool capacities, as well as its 330-tool Tool Hive System for the machine.
The VERSATECH V-140N’s massive bridge construction makes for greater machine rigidity and for one of the industry’s most spacious work envelopes. With a 275.6” long (7,000 mm) X-axis travel, 181.1”-wide (4,600 mm) Y-axis column travel and 94,797-lb table load capacity, the machine easily accommodates huge, heavy workpieces common to industries such as aerospace, energy and heavy equipment.
A spacious 122” wide x 236.2” long machine worktable also offers the option of loading smaller multiple parts for continuous unmanned operations. And for even higher production, a two-table changing system is available, allowing for two full tables worth of continuous uninterrupted part processing.
With Mazak’s MATRIX 2 CNC control, the VERSATECH V-140N delivers extremely fast processing speed, excellent cornering and superior part surface finishes. Through advanced hardware and software functionality, the control enhances full, simultaneous 5-axis machining and allows for easy and simple incorporation of automation.
